“Peter is amazing — so easy to work with, responsive, and pleasant. Thank you, Peter, for the beautiful poster and writing for our website. Thank you so much!” —The Bautista Family
Client: Bautista Weaving is the family business of Francisco and Laura Bautista, Master Weavers working on traditional foot pedal looms in Sandy, Oregon.
Project Description: Update text for website, incorporating elements from the existing prose; create a 30″ x 20″ poster using provided images, and a shortened version of the new web text.
“Weaving is like dancing. You move your whole body in harmony with the loom, stepping in rhythm on the pedals, one and then the other. The colors of yarn play like instruments around you as you weave, and the tapestry that emerges is the song you have made together, you and your loom.”
The Inside Scoop
When Francisco Bautista first asked me if I could update the text on his website one sunny morning at the Portland Saturday Market, I had no idea what I was getting myself into.
“Sure,” I said casually, knowing that the bulk of my work would involve preserving the romantic peculiarities of his Spanish expressions in a way which still flowed grammatically in the Germanic frankness of English prose.
And while that proved true, what I discovered in the undertaking of Francisco’s project was so much more. A richness of culture and heritage, of tradition and craftsmanship unfurled before me.
Weaving in Francisco’s family stretches back four generations — and with his son and daughter taking up the loom, that number has grown to five.
My Favorite Part
Making a border from Francisco’s weaving — thereby framing the entire poster in his work.
