Due to the huge fluctuations in size and weight of his products, we needed a way to calculate shipping per item which took those factors into account, along with the relative distance to the shipping destination.
Client: Leoni Montenegro is a woodworker from Guatamala, building furniture and home décor by hand—all from recycled wine barrels.
Project Description: Create a website and shopping cart, including a shipping calculation system which would factor in size, weight, and the destination region.
The Inside Scoop
Leoni needed a site that was easy to update and add products to, and which he could use to bolster his direct sales by giving his customers a way to follow up on his latest work.
Keeping with the wine barrel theme, I used wood tones and some open-license images to get his site off the ground.
For the shopping cart, I used WooCommerce with some added functionality for Leoni’s shipping system.
Due to the huge fluctuations in size and weight of his products (we’re talking candle holders to dining tables), we needed a way to calculate shipping per item which took those factors into account, along with the relative distance to the shipping destination.
Bad news is, WooCommerce doesn’t offer that kind of functionality without upgrading their plugin to the tune of several hundred dollars (which is a high price tag for just one feature). Meanwhile, other third-party options often require monthly subscriptions (which wasn’t ideal either).
Ultimately, I was able to setup automatic size and weight shipping calculations for Leoni without having to resort to expensive alternatives.
On the downside, the system required manually entering size, weight, and region classifications into a data table, but the result is automatic, accurate shipping with no additional overhead.
